Typically, I have been doing an Ashtanga class on Thursdays and it’s going great. I really love the class and the instructor, and I am now setting goals within the class – more flexibility, moving on to advanced poses etc. It also feels more like a workout which is what I wanted for this inquiry. However, I also tried a Restorative Yin class on Wednesday and I enjoyed it as well! It was a lot calmer, and involved more gentle stretches and body movement. The name was very fitting – seemed like it would be a great recovery class, a stretch after a hard workout or hike. Also, great for a calm down for kids. I especially liked this class for teaching because the focus wasn’t on pushing your body, it was about breathing and settling into poses that were different but not overly challenging. I feel like it would be great for students because they wouldn’t feel like they couldn’t do certain things.
The instructor for the restorative class began and ended the class with the phrase “the greatest possession you can own is an open heart.” I liked how she started with an intention and then repeated it at the end. In doing this she pulls your focus away from busy life things and gives you something to think about during your practice. Both classes were very different but I feel really good at the end of any practice. My body just feels rested which is crazy after some of the movements and it’s great to go from the hot yoga studio to cool winter evenings outside. I really think a lot of yoga practices would aid a calm classroom environment.
